[Macedon]

One of the greatest Macedonian songs from the 18th century sung by on of the
greatest Macedonian bands from the 20th century.
The song "The year (or the summer) of 1762 was written by Grigor Prlicev to
commemorate abolishment of the wholly Macedonian Orthodox Church, the Ohrid
Archiepiskopy. Interestingly, Prlicev made a mistake in his song, the
Archiepiskopy of Ohrid was abolished in 1767, not 1762. Anyways, the test
was used in a Macedonan traditional songs throughout the centuries and in
the 1980s Mizar used the traditional song to create one of the best
alternative songs of all times. The song can be downloaded here

Another interesting point is that the Greek hatred for the Macedonians was
evident back in the 18th century and makes part of the song. I tried to
translate to English, if someone has better translation, please post. One

I am shure you are referring to Ansambl Biljana here :-). Theirs is the
best (traditional) version of all, in my opinion, closely followed by the
one from Naum Burnaz.
The song itself depicts the closure of the Ohrid Archiepiscopy by the
turkish Sultan in 1767, at the request of (and bribes from) the pro-greek
Phanariots, who had earned themselves close, friendly relationship with
the Sultan by carrying out numerous dirty deeds for him. This is by far
the most significant and tragic event in Macedonians' more recent history.
It marks the turning point and the beginning of the demise of Macedonian
ecclestical influence, which translates in destruction of the leading
force in the development of their national conscience and the beginning of
the sub-Saharan (Greek) propaganda penetration in Macedonia, via the
Constantinople Patriarchy and subsequent "Bulgar" and Serb penetrations,
all claiming Macedonia and the Macedonians for themselves.

instruments like the magical kaval (flute), gajda (bagpipe), tapan (drum),
zurla (a wooden wind instrument which produces a very loud shrieking

recommend the tracks "Oj, devojche", "9-ka" and "Ori Anche".
There can also be found the pop mega star from Krushevo, Toshe Proevski.
Uunfortunately he is not my favourite Vlach :-(.
In the traditional "narodni pesni" (people's (folk) songs) section, where
the best music in the world bar none resides :-), besides the famous names
like Badev, Sarievski, Ilieva, Tomovska, Vidanka Georgieva, one can find
other beautiful songs from the likes of Borche Krstevski, Kiril Machevski,
Vojo and Biljan Stojanoski, Orce Stevkovski, Goce Nikolovski, Zoran Vanev,

Indeed, it reflects on the darkest turning point of the Macedonian history.

I don't follow the folk music, but I do follow the contemporary. An
interesting fact is that Anastasia (Before the rain) recorded their first
record Premin in Greece at the time of the Greek embargo on Macedonia. They
wanted to prove that music is stronger than politics.

Uunfortunately he is not my favourite Valch :-(.

Indeed, it reflects on the darkest turning point of the Macedonian history.

If that event did not occur I am certain that we (the Macedonians) would not
had to spend so much of our valuable time "dealing" with the sub-human
sub-Saharans here:-), the "Bulgars" and their artificially created (with
MANI ) "sub-Saharans" and "Bulgars" (grkomani and bugaromani), as neither
Greece, nor Bulgaria would have been what they are today. Some (most likely
"Bulgaria) may not have even existed.

Just to get you started :-), listen to Anastasija's "Death of Alexander"
("So maki sum se rodila") and "Kirajdzhivche jabandzhivche" to hear what
excellent modern day musicians and excellent traditional folk singers (Vanja
Lazarova in both cases, with Vlatko Stefanovski (Ritmistika album) in the
second example) can create. Both are real specials and can be found at
www.radiomk.com .

I know mostly of the older generation "contemporaries" from the "shlageri"
era of the sixties and seventies. From the latter(?) generations Janevski,
Kaliopi, Dario and Samardzhiev (pop-folk) I am most familiar with. If you

interesting fact is that Anastasia (Before the rain) recorded their first
record Premin in Greece at the time of the Greek embargo on Macedonia.
They wanted to prove that music is stronger than politics.

Anastasija had several very successful concerts in Solun, as well.

One of the greatest Macedonian songs from the 18th century sung by on of
the greatest Macedonian bands from the 20th century.

I am shure you are referring to Ansambl Biljana here :-). Theirs is the
best (traditional) version of all, in my opinion, closely followed by the
one from Naum Burnaz.
The song itself depicts the closure of the Ohrid Archiepiscopy by the
turkish Sultan in 1767, at the request of (and bribes from) the pro-greek
Phanariots, who had earned themselves close, friendly relationship with
the Sultan by carrying out numerous dirty deeds for him. This is by far
the most significant and tragic event in Macedonians' more recent
history. It marks the turning point and the beginning of the demise of
Macedonian ecclestical influence, which translates in destruction of the
leading force in the development of their national conscience and the
beginning of the sub-Saharan (Greek) propaganda penetration in Macedonia,
via the Constantinople Patriarchy and subsequent "Bulgar" and Serb
penetrations, all claiming Macedonian and the Macedonians for themselves.

The song "The year (or the summer) of 1762 was written by Grigor Prlicev
to commemorate abolishment of the wholly Macedonian Orthodox Church, the
Ohrid Archiepiskopy. Interestingly, Prlicev made a mistake in his song,
the Archiepiskopy of Ohrid was abolished in 1767, not 1762.

Maybe Prlichev did not make a mistake :-). 1762 is a significant point in
time, as well, as this is the year when the "process" for the eventual
closure in 1767 had started.

in the 1980s Mizar used the traditional song to create one of the best
alternative songs of all times. The song can be downloaded here

Another interesting point is that the Greek hatred for the Macedonians
was evident back in the 18th century and makes part of the song. I tried
to translate to English, if someone has better translation, please post.

I finally was able to download the CD and played it for the first time
in the car on the way to the countryside in Virginia on a small
vacation. It was good from the ambient point of view but the lyrics
were sparce with the majoity of the peices being instrumental only or
else just the vocals were so faints that they were not a feature. So,
far as I think, the best album so far of Anastasia is the Before the
Rain CD (available from Tower Records in the US) and the best way to put
the music in context is to watch the move( only available on tape, not
DVD so far, and sometimes, rarely, rentable fro Blockbuster)

I want to thank you, Nikolaj, for making this recording available.
Since I have never heard this band live, the recording was very
interesting to listen to.

Hm... Must listen to Before the Rain again... But I still think this

emits various Macedonian songs and bands old and modern.

But I think modern bands are nice too (D'Daltons, Superhiks, Ajvar, T.B.
Tračeri) and especially the whole dark scene of the 80s (Kismet, Telo
nauka sovršena, Padot na Vizantija, Mizar etc). Imagine 'Love will tear
as apart' by Joy division, but arranged with zurla (I think) and other
traditional instruments... very nice.

I have seen Laibach twice, very good band. From the new Macedonian bands I
would recommend String Forces, they went into MTV charts four years ago and
I heard they have new album, which I am looking forward to. The previous one
was brilliant.

Leb i Sol did form. I contacted one of Vlatko's music partners (good friend
of mine) and apparently they only reformed to commemorate their anniversary
with series of concerts and one single, but you never know.

Archiepiskopy of Ohrid was abolished in 1767, not 1762. Anyways, the test
was used in a Macedonan traditional songs throughout the centuries and in
the 1980s Mizar used the traditional song to create one of the best
alternative songs of all times. The song can be downloaded here

The Ohrid Archbishoptry has been created by Basil II Bulgarslayer.

In the history are known three chartes for its creation.

In the first charter (1019) Basil II wrote: " The God has given to me
as the
greatest wealth the state of the Bulgars." He included in the dioscese
of Ohrid Archbishoptry "all Bulgarian episcopates, as all town that
have been under the rule of the kings Peter and Samuil" . Altogether
16 eparchies (episcopates) have been included: Ohrid, Kastoria
(Kostur),
Glavinitsa, Mglen, Buteli (Bitola), Strumica, Velbuzd (Kyustendil),
Triadica (Sredets, Sofia), Branichevo (Kostolac), Nish, Belgrad,
Tramos (Srem), Scopie, Prizren, Lipljan and Servia.

In the second charter (1020) have been added 13 episcopates more:
Druster (Silistra), Vidin, Rasa (Novi Pazar), Oreja, Chernik, Himara,
Adrianopol (Drinopol in Albania), Kozel, Petra and Rigi.

In the third charter (1022) another two episcopates have been added -
Stag and Verea (Ber).

As seen the Ohrid Archbishoptry included the whole territory
of the Bulgarian lands - from the Danube delta to Albanian mountains,
and from Belgrad to Kostur and Ber.

The Ohrid Archbishoptry became an organ of the Byzantine Empire
for Greekizying of the population. But then Bulgaria and Serbia
have been restored. With the restoration of Bulgaria in the lands
above the Hemus mountain have been created independent
Turnovo Archbishoptry.

The things became very complicated for the Ohrid Archbishoptry when
the Serbian Orthodox Church separated from it. Its first eparchies
have been Rashka, Prizren, Lipen and Srem.

As not all of the lands of the dioscese of the Ohrid Archbishoptry
have been included into the second Bulgarian kingdom, it continued
to coexist, together with Turnovo Archbishoptry. When the Balkan
peninsula has been conquered by the Ottomans, it also continued
to coexist until 1763. In that year died the Ohrid archbishop
Jeremija (Geremy). The phanariotes made all possible to elect
the protege of the Constantinople Patriarch Yoannikius - Ananius.
So Annanius has been elected by fraud (using false letters from
the people in the dioscese) in 1764. But in Ohrid the population
did not accept Annanius, and elected Arsenij. Nine mitropolits
have been bribed by the mitropolit Evtimij in Kastoria (Kostur) and
voted against Arsenij. He has been forced to leave. As a result
the Ohrid Archbishoptry has been liquidated with a special
Irade of the Sultan in 1767. All lands of its dioscese have been
given to the Constantinople Patriarchy. In order completely to
destroy it, Constantinople Patriarch even destroyed the
eparchy of Ohrid - it has been subordinated to the Archbishop
of Drach. The name Ohrid also in the church has been
replaced with the Greek Lihnis.

Dr Petar Popovski has written extensively on the history the "Ohridska
Crkva" and its extensive (expansive) influence, including Russia, which
rivalled the Constantinople Patriarchy and in some cases (Russia) even
surpassing it. "Makedonsko Sonce" towards the end of last year published
numerous articles from his book. Anyone interested can browse its online
archive and find those articles (pdf), or I can provide some of them (in
Word format, with lots of typos eliminated).
