Dimitri Papamichael who died on midday Sunday, in the age of 70, from heart
attack.

According to first information, the popular theatre and cinema
star was on holidays in Ermioni when he felt sudden malaise. He was
transported by the last companion of his life, Nadia Moyroyzi, in the
Kranidi centre of Health, where he was just announced dead. Dimitris
Papamichael had been withdrawn from the Greek artistic scene during the last
few years mainly because of the health problems he was facing.
He was born in Piraeus in 1934, his father was the householder
of a cafe in the Hatzikyriakeio. He studied in the Drama Faculty of National
Theatre where he made also his debut in Evripidi's "Ekavi" in 1955. He then
interpreted several important roles from 1955 until 1960 in the Theatre of
Art. Then he worked with his spouse at the time Aliki Vougiouklaki, from
1964 to 1974. During that period they presented many important plays, like
Bernard Shaw's "My Beautiful Lady".
From his marriage with Aliki Vougiouklaki acquired his son
Yiannis, in 1965. Of course Dimitris Papamichael was popular in the Greek
public mainly for his cinema roles in the golden period of Greek cinema from
1950 to 1960. Some of his popular films are the "Last Lie" (1957), "the Aunt
from Chicago" (1957), "Astero" (1959), "Mantalena" "1960)," Never on Sunday
" (1960),"Aliki in the Navy "(1961), "Red Lights" (1963), "School
heartbeats" (1963), "the Fairy and the Lad" (1969), "the Girl of the Fun
fair", "my Dimitri, my Dimitri" (1969), "Lieutenant Natasha" (1970) and
"Papaflessas" (1971).
"Dimitris Papamichael in his long-lasting creative service in
the theatre and the cinema gained the love of the Greek crowd. A
multi-talented, uneasy author, interpreter of rich repertory, will remain
live in the memory of all of us through his work", stresses in his statement
the Prime Minister and minister of Culture, Kostas Karamanlis, expressing
his condolences to the family of the popular actor.
"Dimitris Papamichael was one of the big stars of the Greek
theatre and cinema. His work will always remind to us an entire period of
blossoming and innocence of Greek cinema. I want to express my warmest
condolences to his family, for the loss of their own person", expressed in
his condolence telegram the chairman of PASOK, Giorgos Papandreou.
"Dimitris Papamichael was a big actor and an important man. With
his presence he stamped an entire era of the Greek cinema and theatre. His
enormous offering in the art constitutes for all of us an important deposit.
My warmest condolences to the family and his friends", were words from the
statement of mayor of Athens City, Ntora Mpakogjanni.
